Project funded by the British Government and implemented in partnership with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) that investigates the impact of exports of manufactured goods from selected countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia on the local environment and health.
In a first moent of the project, Instituto 17 carried out a study on the environmental impact of exports of manufactured products in four selected countries: Bangladesh, Pakistan, Kenya and Tanzania. The Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) technique was used to estimate the impact caused by exports from relevant economic sectors to countries. Aspects of public and private governance were also analyzed in order to identify gaps and challenges to improve the control of pollution caused by the export of manufactured goods in these countries. In the second phase, the LCA database was expanded to the other 9 SMEP focus countries: D.R. Congo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Uganda, Zambia and Nepal.
